Shopping in Provinsen

Are you planning to do some jule-shopping in Denmark this year? In that case I would suggest that you add a trip to a couple of smaller towns as well in addition to the traditional Julemarked in Tivoli. Julestemningen in a small provinsby in Denmark is something quite special! The shops are concentrated in a hyggelig downtown where it’s easy to feel at home and ”traditional,” there are often markets and live music in the street, and it’s not unheard of to find a place that serves æbleskiver and hot chocolate, and you find some wonderfully unique shops!

I can recommend a trip to Kerteminde on Fyn. With today’s fast trains and the wonderful new bridges it’s only a short ride from Copenhagen. Kerteminde is full of unique and very old shops as well as some new ones. When I visited Denmark in September I found the most delightful art shop in Langegade 44 called ”Kunsthuset Makiah-art”. The very versatile artist behind this establishment is Makiah Larsen, who offers you an awsome selection of colorful, joyful, humoristic (but also some serious) paintings created with acrylics, structural elements and oilpaint. She also paints very original (and quite comfortable I may add) chairs, which she frequently customizes according to the wishes of her customers, and she offers a most delightful, eclectic collection of jewelry.  Benches are also available, by the way, one of which was entered in this year’s Kerteminde Cherry Festival.

Makiah expresses her art philosophy along these lines: We see what we experience, and experience what we see, that is what creates the art. She is inspired by the people she meets on the highway of life, and she paints what she finds intriguing and interesting, she always chooses new roads, which in turn causes her artworks to constantly move forward, to become modern. Makiah aims to create wonder and joy, she creates art for people on all levels. Her work method is to paint changing and very different series of paintings, preferably with messages, and she often incorporates humor in her pictures. She paints into her pictures both figurative and abstract elements.

According to Kunsthuset’s owners, Makiah Larsen and her business partner, civiløkonom Claus Biehlendorff, the mission of Kunsthuset is on the one hand to display and sell Makiah’s works as well as other artists’ sculptures, ceramics, glass and jewelry and on the other hand to create a frame for events and lectures. They are always open for good ideas, events and any exiting initiatives, which may be relevant for Kunsthuset. They want to create a warm and inviting artistic atmosphere and thereby contribute to the town of Kerteminde’s cultural environment.
